Here is a bike that i designed for my good friend Yorgo Tloupas at Intersection magazine.
we actually managed to get it working, thanks to all the kind ladies and gents down at Brick Lane Bike Polo
here’s a little video of it in action:

I’m an engineer in Canada. It occurred to me that if you welded some bent plate the the ends of the spokes, such that the “feet” all follow a circular path, you might make the ride a little easier. I know it’s more art than functionality, but I would love to see this bike fly down the street past onlookers.

Well, its never going to fly, but if you want it to be rideable for short distances, simply reduce the gearing a LOT by fitting a very small crankset: 32 teeth will be more than enough, 28 teeth would be good.
This assumes the shoes never, ever, collide with the frame and slow it down…

Oooh, this brings me back to the 70s when one of these was shown in a TV game show. The purpose was to drive as fast or as original over a plank 10 cm wide laying over a canal. This one won the original prize. The next year, the same guy had a bike with shoes that actually walked instead of turned.
Sorry no pictures, but it was on Dutch TV.

to the engineer’s point about the curved plate, it might also walk more smoothly if it had more spokes and baby shoes.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, i agree that a lower gear is needed to make it more feesible to ride and was discussed when we were attempting to ride it. Thankyou also to the engineer from Canada, curved feet was another of the alterations i was thinking about making for the mk2 (if there is one.. )
